Writing Retreat, Day One

The Milky Way above the road and trees

In my first full day at the cabin, I:

  • Worked on the outline for “Praise the Torch When ‘Tis Burned” (aka the “ghosts in a derelict starship” story)
  • Went for a bike ride, snapped a few photos (one of which I liked—the “On Reflection” below)
  • Stopped in at the store for a couple of groceries that I forgot
  • Decided, on seeing how many people in the store were maskless—including at least one employee—that I’m going to make do with what I’ve got for as long as I can
  • Went for a drive to check out a possible photo site discovered by my friend Tim
  • Met up with Tim in Sandy Lake for a physically-distanced chin-wag on the sidewalk
  • Worked some more on the “Torch” outline
  • Realized at about 10:15 pm that
    1. I didn’t have enough fuel to get me to the photo site I’d checked out earlier and back, and
    2. all the gas stations in my vicinity were closed
  • Watched an episode of Firefly
  • Checked the sky just before midnight—nice and dark and clear—then looked up “Dark Sky Sites Near Me
  • Decided to check out a fairly close site, about fifteen minutes’ drive from the cabin
  • Got the header photo (and a couple others)
  • Returned to the cabin at 1:30am and dropped into bed.

Cemetery critters

My bike ride took me down to the graveyard yesterday, and I saw some wildlife there.

Lilacs

Lilacs

They have such a lovely smell and such a brief season.

Update: In a bit of weird synchronicity, I posted this the day before “Wear the Lilac Day”, a day created by fans of the late Sir Terry Pratchett—one of my favourite authors—to commemorate his writing and to support research into Alzheimer Disease. Since Dad had dementia, this one strikes me a bit as “is the universe telling me something?”

A bee, hard at work

Today I went 28km (further than I thought) and got photos of a bee at work, a couple of dead trees, and a miniature riverside inuksuk.

Map of my ride

The weather’s supposed to turn wintry again for a few days, so I took advantage of today’s nice weather for a good long bike ride—27.8km, which took about 1¾ hour or so of cycling (I stopped to take photos and to chat with a friend, so I was gone from the house for 2½ hours).

I took my camera along, too, and snapped some photos.

The contrail photo above is actually a panorama of about six photos. Compare and contrast below with a single-frame version of the same image.

All right, autumn can be pretty

Autumn Leaves

Those who know me know that I much prefer spring and summer to fall. I love the new growth of spring, and I would much rather wear shorts and T‑shirts than long johns and parkas. Autumn’s beginning brings with it the threat of inevitable winter, and it makes me somewhat melancholy.

But I will grudgingly admit that early autumn, before the cold sets in to stay, has its own charms.
