New snow, Feb. 7, 2024

Posted on February 7th, 2024February 7th, 2024 by Patrick
Branches covered in wet heavy snow (black and white)

After a week of unseasonable warmth, our snow was starting to thin out. It’s snowing again tonight, though, heavy, wet snow. Here’s a bit of it clinging to the branches of one of the trees in our yard.

Coffee time

My older-than-I-am coffee percolator on a red-hot burner on my stove, next to my Banned Books mug

Thursday morning: making coffee in the percolator my grandparents used to use when they’d go camping.

Rime Ice, January 26th

Rime ice (aka hoarfrost) on branches, with plenty of blurry bokeh in the background

It was really foggy on the evening of the 25th. I had a bus to catch on the 26th, but I spent a few minutes in the back yard taking photos of the rime ice before I had to leave town.

Aurora Borealis

I took a lot of photos in 2023, some in the daylight, some after dark. Here are some of my favourites.

Moonrise, Boxing Day

The moon rising behind a bare tree; the sky is dark blue with purplish clouds

The sun had just set and the moon was just coming up when we got to the farm.

Christmas frost

Frost on the window at the farm

It cooled off a bit overnight, and I liked the light shining through the frost on the farmhouse door this morning.

And lit up, too.

Rime ice

Rime ice / hoarfrost on a hedge's branches and berries

…I think. Maybe it’s hoarfrost, though it came from a freezing fog last night.

Moonlit aurora, Dec. 1, 2023

Posted on December 1st, 2023December 1st, 2023 by Patrick

The moon was up by the time I got out, so the lights were a bit washed out. The clouds rolled in and I left. In between I snapped a bunch of photos of the northern lights and heard a coyote howling in the distance.

The Just City

Quote from Jo Walton's The Just City: "There isn't an end point to excellence where you have it and you can stop. Being your best self means keeping on trying."

This line in Jo Walton’s The Just City struck me hard, and so I share it with you.

“There isn’t an end point to excellence where you have it and you can stop. Being your best self means keeping on trying.”
