“The first draft is you telling yourself the story.”
—Sir Terry Pratchett
Well, I’ve got a first draft written. After all’s said and done, “There’s Nothing Good at the Top” clocked in at 19,850 words.
What’s it about? Well, it’s weird, that’s for sure. It’s an urban fantasy, or maybe it’s a CanLit classic with a creepy twist[1]A boy can dream..
Here are some of the things you’ll find in it[2]Eventually.:
- A tower
- A small town
- A yearbook called the Flambeau
- A dog named Fizzgig
- A kid named Lennon
- Another kid named Kal
- A diary written in Hilroy scribblers
- French
- Weeping birches
- Autumn
- Another tower
- And more
Now I leave it alone for a while, and then—once a suitable amount of time has passed—it’ll be time to start rewriting[3]Because, as they say, “writing is rewriting”..
Oh, and hunting for a market for it. That’ll be important too.
