    Tachi-waza, or standing techniques

  1. Hane-goshi, or the “Springing Hip Throw”. Fast, and efficient, and you don’t have to turn your back to your opponent.
  2. De-ashi-barai, “Advancing Foot Sweep”. There’s a subtle trickery to this one that appeals to me, a subverting of expectations when it’s done in the kata style.
  3. Ko-soto-gake, “Small Outside Hook”. Again, you don’t have to turn your back to your opponent; just hook his supporting foot and drive him back, off-balancing him to his rear corner.

Today…

…I saw a pair of horse-drawn carriages coming down the street. They pulled off, into a parking lot, to let the traffic behind them go by. Inspired by Rob Cockerham’s motto (“Always bring your camera”), I snapped a couple of photos, presented below for your edification. No, I don’t know where the carriages were going. Yes, the drivers had cowboy hats on.

Crazy Ideas file, #1

This one came to me yesterday on my way home at lunch. I’ve written the first 200ish words, but I don’t yet have a satisfactory ending.

Everyone in the entire world sleeps a deep, 24-hour sleep, and experiences the same dream. When they awaken, night has been banished forever. Someone or something has turned the Earth inside-out, placing a small sunlike body at the center of the hollow sphere. What comes next? Guess I’ll find out as I write.
